Overview
Position: Men's 7s Head Coach / 15s Assistant Coach, National Team Programs. Location: Langford, BC. Reports To: Head Coach, National Senior Men's 15s Team; High-Performance Director. Travel: Domestic and International. Primary Programs: Canada Men's 7s Senior National Team; Canada Men's 15s Senior National Team.
Role: A unique dual-role offering strategic and technical leadership across Rugby Canada's senior men's national programs. The role combines duties as Head Coach of the Senior Men's 7s National Team with responsibilities as Assistant Coach to the Senior Men's 15s National Team, contributing to the long-term success of both pathways.
Key focus includes leading the 7s program through the World Rugby SVNS Series and the Olympic cycle, while supporting the 15s program toward the 2027 Rugby World Cup and beyond, with an emphasis on athlete development, performance planning, and high-performance outcomes.
One Squad Ethos: Rugby Canada operates as One Squad, with collaboration across programs to drive excellence. The role may support Women's 15s/7s and Pathway Programs as needed, contributing coaching and analytical expertise while upholding Rugby Canada's values.
ResponsibilitiesHead Coach - National Senior Men's 7s (Primary)
- Lead planning and preparation of training sessions; organize and deliver effective sessions and meetings
- Evaluate training session effectiveness and implement continuous improvements to maximize team performance
- Foster a positive, inclusive, high-performing team culture aligned with Rugby Canada values and Safe Sport principles
- Lead matchday operations, including pre-match prep, in-game management, halftime adjustments, substitutions, and post-match review
- Develop and oversee IPPs and IDPs to support athlete progression
- Lead player identification, talent recruitment, and succession planning for the national program
- Collaborate with performance analysts for timely, actionable feedback to enhance performance
- Collaborate with Strength & Conditioning and IST to optimize athlete development and return-to-play
- Design and implement strategies to maximize individual and team performance
- Provide strategic leadership and management of the Men's Sevens performance support staff
- Lead strategic development and alignment of the Men's Sevens NextGen pathway
- Work with the Senior Men's 15s Head Coach and high-performance leadership to ensure Sevens-15s alignment within One Squad
Assistant Coach - National Senior Men's 15s (Secondary)
- Support development and delivery of the team's attacking strategy and technical attack skills
- Deliver technical coaching to enhance kicking performance
- Support player identification, evaluation, monitoring, and selection
- Assist in preparation and delivery of high-performance training sessions
- Support implementation of the national team performance plan ensuring alignment with One Squad
- Conduct analysis of team performances and opponents to inform game plans
- Attend and contribute to national team camps, matches, and competitions, when schedules allow
Cross-Program Collaboration
Support other Rugby Canada programs and contribute to knowledge transfer, in coordination with the direct manager, with clear communication and advance notice as possible.
Requirements- Rugby Canada Level 3 Coach Accreditation (or equivalent)
- Proven success coaching at international, professional, or elite high-performance level
- Extensive coaching experience in high-performance rugby with success leading teams in major international competitions
- Strong technical and tactical knowledge of 7s and 15s attack
- Experience leading multidisciplinary high-performance teams (coaches, analysts, S&C, medical, sport science)
- Experience in talent identification, player development, and succession planning
- Results-oriented with ability to set priorities and maintain high professional standards
- Commitment to athlete-centered coaching, Safe Sport, equity, diversity and inclusion, ethical leadership
- Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt schedules across overlapping windows; flexible to support multiple programs
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively; work evenings, weekends, and long tours
- Strategic decision-making and problem-solving skills
