Volunteer Board Director
Moms Against Racism (MAR) Canada | National | Remote
Moms Against Racism (MAR) Canada is seeking up to four Directors to join our 2027 Board.
MAR is a federally registered non-profit working to build the knowledge, relationships and capacity people need to create change in their homes, schools, workplaces and communities. What began as a grassroots movement has grown into a national organization, and we are looking for people who want to help steward what comes next.
Our Board provides governance, strategic direction, oversight and accountability, while working in relationship with MAR staff, members, partners and the communities our work is intended to serve.
Who We Are Looking For We believe good governance is relational and strengthened by the different lived experiences, perspectives, and ways of knowing and being we bring into relationship with each other.
We are looking for Directors who will bring their wisdom, perspective and strategic thinking to the work by asking thoughtful questions, engaging with complexity, making decisions together and helping move MAR forward.
As MAR continues to grow, we are particularly interested in experience in areas including:
- Non-profit, charitable or community governance
- Strategic planning and organizational development
- Fund development, philanthropy and partnerships
- Human resources and people-centred organizational culture
- Policy, advocacy or systems change
- Communications and community engagement
- Program evaluation, research or impact measurement
- Indigenous relations, decolonization and reconciliation
We also value knowledge that doesn't come from a job title or résumé. Parenting and caregiving, navigating systems, community organizing, cultural knowledge, advocacy, experiencing inequity, building community and supporting others can all strengthen governance. Prior Board experience is an asset but not required.
Building Our Board Intentionally
We are intentional about building and maintaining a Board that reflects diversity across identities and lived experiences and are actively inviting nominations from Indigenous and racialized people, as well as people whose identities and experiences are currently underrepresented in our governance.
We are particularly seeking Indigenous Directors for our 2027 Board as we work to strengthen Indigenous representation within MAR's leadership and governance.
Commitment
- Term: Three years, with the possibility of reappointment
- Board meetings: Approximately 1.5 hours monthly
- Committee and governance work: Approximately 3–4 additional hours per month
Board members also participate in ongoing learning and at least one Board committee or priority governance project.
What You Give and What You Get Back
Board service is both a contribution and an opportunity to grow. You'll have opportunities to contribute your skills, lived experience and perspective while building relationships, deepening your learning, sharing in a common purpose and helping shape meaningful change.
Do you have skills, gifts, experience or capacity you'd like to contribute to our work, while receiving connection, learning, shared purpose and the experience of making a meaningful difference in return?
We'd love to meet you.
